With over twenty years of teaching and administrative experience, Eric came to American University Preparatory School as the lead mathematics faculty member after serving for ten years as a mathematics instructor in the upper school at Polytechnic School in Pasadena, California. During that time, Eric not only taught all the courses in the honors and accelerated tracks, but he was integral in writing curriculum and mentoring new faculty in the mathematics department. In addition to teaching Poly’s standard curriculum, which includes AP Calculus AB/BC, Eric served as a faculty advisory to many students and mentored students in independent study programs in several areas of higher mathematics such as Number Theory and Group Theory.
Eric holds degrees in Psychology and Mathematics, which he graduated Magna Cum Laude, and has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching including four from Stanford University, two from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and one from Carleton College. He was unanimously chosen as the recipient of Polytechnic School’s Faculty Appreciation Award in addition to being chosen as Teacher of the Year, Instructor of the Year, and Mathematics Teacher of the Year by the Hispanic Sports and Academic Enrichment Program – honors given him when served as Mathematics Department Chair at Luz Academy Preparatory School in Tucson, Arizona.
As the Dean of Academics, Eric is in charge of the coordinating and overseeing academics, curriculum development, and the AUP Faculty. He is responsible for preparing and revising academic program plans for AUP, while and serving as a mentor for promoting excellence in teacher achievement and professional development. Eric completely revised the mathematics curriculum in order to produce clear tracks to success based upon each student’s mathematical ability. He has also introduced the strategy of stranding curriculum based upon a system where students “discover” the essential elements of each of the core content areas through guided lessons and assignments. He created a new school schedule in order to maximize students’ time engaged in classroom instruction and the experiential instructional time spent in Downtown Los Angeles. With Dr. Gary Woods, AUP’s Head of School, Eric lead the WASC accreditation process and established the Faculty Curriculum Committee to aid in the ongoing, long-term development of school-wide curriculum.
When Eric is not engaged in teaching and the development of dynamic mathematics and engaging academic programs at AUP, he enjoys traveling through the intermountain west visiting hot springs and ghost towns with his wife Zchodae and his dog Sparky, mountain biking, and cooking.
It is not knowledge, but the act of learning, not possession but the act of getting there, which grants the greatest enjoyment.
